‘Taxonomy of Typological Classification’, (Article)

Oliver Heckmann

The ‘Floor Plan Manual Housing’ and the web-database ‘Building Types Online’, both published by Birkhaeuser, are the main publications and platforms for typology research. The ongoing works on both publications closely connects to the design research of the Urban Housing Lab and also the teaching of housing design studios and housing typology seminars, benefiting essentially from feedback from students.

Building Types online

Since 2014 I have been working as editor-in-chief for the web database ‘Building Types Online’, developing an editorial concept and a workflow to transfer typological case-study literature published by Birkhäuser from print to digital-based media.  At its core, the internet-database publication project aims to respond to the changing preferences of users to have easy, digital and self-tailored access to learning references.

The tool to integrate all precedents within one knowledge base, to synchronize and complement all contents within a coherent system that covers all essential aspects for the comparative analysis of buildings is an overarching typological classification system that the editors have developed and established. It can be used for tagging the typological characteristics of precedents along with a number of specification aspects, which can be used for search- and browse-requests.

Currently, more than 1000 project case studies can thus be accessed, with in-depth graphical and textual information, and with complimentary articles. In the future, case-study based academic research will also be included. Currently, around 100 university libraries worldwide with architecture departments have access to the portal, all students, educators and researchers are able to use the database for their lessons and studies.
